The federal government should do more to enforce its own immigration laws, U.S. Rep. Steve Buyer, R-Monticello, told Clinton County leaders today.

Buyer came to Frankfort to hear the opinions of local leaders on proposed immigration reforms. Buyer said there is a federal law that mandates that illegal immigrants who commit a crime be deported within a year of being sentenced.

Yet, he learned today that there are criminals in the Clinton County Jail who aren't citizens and yet have been held for a longer period.

"The citizens of this state are very frustrated with the federal government and have expressed their frustration with the federal government's inability to secure the borders and enforce the laws," he said.

Buyer said he opposes giving an amnesty to the nearly 12 million illegal immigrants believed to be in the United States. The country must instead find a "practical compromise" and give those who are here to do honest work some sort of legal status short of citizenship, he said.

After speaking Frankfort, Buyer traveled to Crawfordsville to speak with leaders there about the same topic.
