DANBURY (AP) — Federal authorities have approved a controversial partnership between Danbury police and immigration officials to crack down on illegal aliens.
City officials announced Monday that the U.S. Homeland Security Department has signed off on the partnership between city police and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Danbury's Common Council approved the plan in February, despite the protests of hundreds of people. The city is home to a large number of undocumented workers.
People who oppose local police enforcing federal immigration laws say they're worried about racial profiling and creating a fear of police for both legal and illegal immigrants.
Mayor Mark Boughton and other city officials say the crackdown is needed to protect public safety.
