WEST HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — West Haven police say a man they caught during a foot chase as he tried to flee a motor vehicle stop turned out to be a suspected illegal immigrant wanted for raping a 14-year-old girl.
Police say they tried to stop 38-year-old Alonso Geminiano of Bridgeport on Wednesday for using a hand-held cell phone while driving, but he jumped out of the car and ran. Police say they caught up to him and arrested him after a struggle.

Geminiano was charged with first-degree sexual assault and other crimes. He's being held on $500,000 bail.

Police say Geminiano is suspected of sexually abusing the former West Haven girl over two years. Authorities say they relocated the girl and her family out of state because they're scared of Geminiano.

It's not clear if Geminiano has a lawyer. Police believe he's an illegal immigrant from Mexico.
