Documentation proposal for illegal workers

A proposed new rule by the Department of Homeland Security may force employers to fire people from their workforce.

The rule would hold employers liable for hiring illegal workers. Miles Kohl with Yakima Valleys Growers and Shippers Association says this concerns some agricultural employees. He says right now there are few ways to find out whether the documentation is legitimate. He says the department is moving in the right direction. He favors congress coming up with some kind of comprehensive immigration reform first.

Organizations and unions are speaking against this proposed rule. They say it may prompt panicked employers to fire thousands of workers before they get the chance to resolve the issue.

That rule should have already been in place years and years ago.
