IL: Latino group: DuPage cops are targeting us

Latino group: DuPage cops are targeting us
    2/28/2011 12:43 PM
    By Robert Sanchez

A coalition of local Hispanic leaders is calling for an independent investigation to determine if racial profiling exists in DuPage County.
The demand comes in response to Illinois Department of Transportration statistics the group examined that its members say show police in some DuPage towns stopped a higher percentage of minority motorists in 2009 than reflected in the racial makeup of their communities.

    Known as Secure Communities
As I have always said, even when the Federal Government does do their job they still whine about the enforcement.

They always say "it is the federal governments job to enforce immigration violations" .

Well, surprise amigo. This is the federal government program!

Let's just cut to the chase. We (and I mean MILLIONS of citizens ) want you out of the country. Plain and very simple and to the point.

[quote]Known as Secure Communities, the program is scheduled to be rolled out to all U.S. counties by 2013. Villarreal claims the program singles out immigrants who don’t have a serious criminal record.

ICE Stops Spark Fear and Anger in Illinois

    Published March 02, 2011

    Comments (11)

Local law enforcement and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are intimidating the Hispanic community in Illinois with arrests they are making under Program 287(g), activists say.

A coalition of Latino organizations in DuPage County, west of Chicago, say authorities are engaging in racial profiling as they implement ICE's Secure Communities program.

"They're arresting Hispanics in greater proportion to (their numbers) in this county," Cynthia Brito, a member of the coalition, told Efe.

Brito gave as an example the fact that in the town of Addison, where she lives, just 30 percent of the residents are Hispanics but this group accounts for 35 percent of the people pulled over in traffic stops.

That means, Brito said, that 61 Hispanics were detained in a total of 88 stops. But, what is contradictory, she said, is that of the 66 traffic stops of Hispanics, in just six cases was there reasonable cause for police to arrest the person and search the car.

"Consent searches" are when police stop a driver based on a reasonable suspicion and that person gives permission to the police to search inside the car.

"We're concerned that these consent searches are being used as a tool to intimidate our community," Brito said.

Hispanics say that what is happening in Addison is also occurring in other communities of DuPage County like Carol Stream, Glendale Heights, Hanover Park, Villa Park, Naperville, West Chicago and Bloomingdale.

In Carol Stream, they said, the cars of 46 Hispanics were halted by police and in just four cases had the occupants committed any crime.

"This type of behavior on the part of the police has created fear among Hispanics and they don't trust the police any longer," said Brito. "It's counterproductive, the police are supposed to serve and protect, not to intimidate."

In neighboring Chicago, meanwhile, Cook County Commissioner Jesus GarcĂ*a announced that he is investigating the practicality of turning over to ICE undocumented people who are arrested despite the fact that the city is not part of the Secure Communities program.

GarcĂ*a said that he had had meetings with county Sheriff Tom Data and that the latter assured him that "there is no agreement with ICE and he told us that when he took over the post ICE was already here."

GarcĂ*a added that he had also met with Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez, who - he said - "told us the same thing, that there was no agreement with ICE but that the ... practice has been in existence since before she was elected."

Activist José Landaverde, with the Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission in Chicago's mainly Mexican Little Village neighborhood, told Efe that each day 60 to 80 immigrants are sent from the Cook County Jail to the ICE detention center in Broadview, 10 miles west of Chicago, for possible deportation.

    Not racial profiling

A coalition of local Hispanic leaders is calling for an independent investigation to determine if racial profiling exists in DuPage County. ... “I think us in the Latino community know very well what the police are looking for. They’re targeting Latino drivers in this county.
If they're targeting Latino drivers then they aren't racially profiling becasue Latinos aren't a race. In fact, Latinos are about the most racially mixed ethnic group around.

Hmmmm . . .. .. First of all the majority of hispanics in the western suburbs do NOT live in DuPage county. The majority of them live enmass in Aurora, Joliet, Romeoville and Bolingbrook all of which are in WILL county.

I live in DuPage County and the majority population is and always has been white. The majority of the people who live here have owned their homes for decades. There are very few Blacks and the (majority) minority in this area are physicians from India and Pakistan. In all of the years that I have lived here, despite the fact that I have never seen a Black policeman in my area, I have NEVER been stopped or profiled by the police.

These so called latino leaders need to find another trump card, like Jesse and Al the race card has outlived its usefulness . . . .
It's Time to Rescind the 14th Amendment
