Feb 9, 2006, 04:34 PM PST
He was supposed to protect the borders from illegal immigrants, instead a former U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officer will be sent to prison for letting them into this country for a price.

42-year old Fabian Solis was sentenced to 36 months in prison for conspiring to smuggle illegal immigrants into the Unites States for money.

U.S. District Judge Ricardo Hinojosa handed Solis his punishment Thursday morning. He also ordered Solis serve two years of supervised released once he's let out of prison.

The former customs inspector was arrested in December 2004.

He admitted he allowed smugglers to transport illegal immigrants through his inspection lanes at the Falcon Heights, Roma and Rio Grande City international bridges.

He also admitted he was paid by smugglers to allow them to enter the country without inspecting their vehicles.
