Vote set on request for New Haven ID card names

July 9, 2008

is not making the request. Will be led following 2 p.m. meeting.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ The state Freedom of Information Commission is taking up a request for the names of people who have New Haven resident ID cards.

A commission hearing officer said last month that the names can remain confidential. The FOI officer said specific, credible threats of violence against New Haven officials and illegal immigrants justify keeping the identities of the card holders secret.

Chris Powell, managing editor of the Journal Inquirer of Manchester, sought the names of people with the ID cards, which are intended to help immigrants gain access to community services.

Some opponents of illegal immigration say the ID cards encourage more illegal immigration.

The Freedom of Information Commission is scheduled to meet in Hartford Wednesday afternoon.
