Governor's Budget Seeks To Cut Services for Recent Immigrants

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's (R) proposal to address the state's $20 billion budget gap would eliminate a number of state services for recent immigrants, including Medi-Cal benefits in many cases, the Los Angeles Times reports. Medi-Cal is California's Medicaid program.

Under federal law, most documented immigrants are ineligible for Medicaid and other public assistance programs until they have been in the U.S. for at least five years.

California and a number of other states established programs to provide those services to recent immigrants, but the federal government does not help fund the programs.

Medi-Cal Proposal

The governor's proposal would eliminate Medi-Cal services for 48,570 documented immigrants who have been in the U.S. for less than five years and about 65,000 undocumented people who claim their deportation is not being pursued. Eligibility for services for pregnant women and children would not be affected by the proposed cuts.

The proposal is expected to reduce state spending by $118 million annually.

However, a recent report by the California Immigrant Policy Center concluded that the projected savings could be offset by increased rates of homelessness and emergency department use.

Last year, the state legislature rejected similar proposals, but benefits have been reduced (Zavis/Gorman, Los Angeles Times, 2/16).

BINGO! You can only fool an American when we're not paying attention. Well, we're paying attention now!

This doesn't go far enough. We need to cut all tax payer assistance to illegal aliens and legal immigrants. You shouldn't receive any tax payer assistance unless you are an American citizen. Even if you come here legally, you should either have a sponsor who will take care of you or you can afford to live here yourself. I'm sick to death of all of these freeloaders who come here and expect and demand a free ride. That is not the America I grew up learning.

Illegals get out, legals either quit whining and get a job or get out yourselves. Sick and tired of all of these self centered worthless pieces of crap who think the taxpayer owes them a living.

I agree with you dman1200. Immigrants are only supposed to be admitted to the country on work visas to supplement our labor force when we have shortages. If there's no work, then they need to have their visa pulled and return home to their country not stick around using up welfare benefits.

Great point, Judy. But at the time we have no real idea if the illegal immigrant is Juan Gomez, Abdullah Musti or Vladimir Putin. Too many ethnic enclaves for them to hide in without notice.
Legal immigrants also embrace the same shelter of others from the old country, while demanding that they be accommodated. They come here to retire on better income than ever provided in the home country through our tax dollars.
Pretty political speech "splains" a lot to those that blindly believe. I prefer to take what I hear with a ton of salt, while facts are blatant in the direction of the falsity of Band-Aid verbiage.
