A key GOP lawmaker tells The Hill that bipartisan discussions on a bill to fix the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program may be ready “as early as tonight.”

“We've had very good meetings here with the Problem Solvers Caucus — [Rep.] Will Hurd [R-Texas] has been working on a potential compromise with some Democrats as well, so we could see something as early as tonight,” Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Fla.) said in an interview with The Hill.

Curbelo, who favors a DACA fix, said that Democrats and Republicans on the Senate side have also worked on possible fixes, ahead of the president's March deadline, noting that "it's possible" that a fix would be added when the Senate considers a funding bill in the next few days.

Thirty-four Republicans signed a letter recently calling on GOP leaders to allow a vote on a bill to fix the DACA issue before Congress heads out of town for the last week in 2017. Most Democrats says they will not support a funding bill if it does not include a provision to help the children brought to the U.S. by parents in the country illegally. A number of conservative lawmakers say they won't support a funding bill that includes a DACA measure.

What Trump does by executive order----how is that relevant to what Congress should do to abolish chain migration, diversity visas, etc.?

Probably Trump should hint that he might extend DACA---if it would gain any Democrat votes in a true immigration reform. He doesn't actually have to do it. This would be a case of deferring to act instead of taking action, as Obama did.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly was seen on Capitol Hill Tuesday as part of the Trump administration’s push to reach a bipartisan solution for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

As Politico reports, Kelly attended a meeting with close to a dozen senators from both sides of the aisle and assured them that the White House “will soon present a list of border security and other policy changes it wants as part of a broader deal” for DACA recipients, also known as DREAMers.

“We couldn’t finish this product, this bill, until we knew where the administration was,” Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), one of the senators working on the compromise, told Politico. “And that’s why this meeting was so important.”

Though senators who left the meeting said Kelly insisted the president’s terms may be released in a matter of days, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said the upper chamber would not vote on DACA before they break for the holidays this Friday.

“That’s a matter to be discussed next year,” McConnell said in an interview with Fox News earlier on Tuesday.
