Dallas Students Head To Washington for DREAM

Proposed 'Dream Act' Grants Immigrants Citizenship
    Stephanie Lucero
    Reporting

(CBS 11 News) DALLAS A group of students is going to Washington D. C. Wednesday in the hopes of persuading Texas congressional leaders to help them become U. S. citizens.

Organizers say the students are good candidates for the so-called Dream Act.

If passed, the Dream Act would allow a path to citizenship for young people who go to college or join the military.

The Dream Act requires students or military personnel to be of good moral character, which is essentially defined as the absence of a significant criminal record.

The three Dallas students who are going to Washington say they have nothing to lose by making the trip. All three may soon be deported.

They don't want their identities revealed because they were all picked up by immigration agents and are awaiting deportation hearings.

"You know, I don't know anything about Mexico," he said. "I was raised here."

One student came to the U. S. illegally when she was young. "I came here when I was five with a visitor's visa and just never left the country," she said.

Another came with his parents. "They were thinking about doing good for us, for our future," he said.

Two of the students attend college and the third is a senior in high school. They are 18 and 19-years-old.

Proponents believe the Dream Act would help the military curb its enlistment crisis. One of the college students said he would have joined the U. S. military if he could.

Larry James, the CEO of Dallas Central Ministries, is escorting the teenagers to Washington, D.C.

"She didn't have the option of raising her hand and saying, 'Mom and Dad, let's not go. I don't want to go. I want to stay here in Mexico,'" said James.

The teens will meet with staffers for U. S. Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn.

A spokesperson for Hutchison says the senator hasn't decided how she will vote on the Dream Act.

Cornyn opposes it because it contains no firm requirement for the illegal immigrant to graduate with a degree from college. He says it grants federal student loans at a time when the government is struggling to meet the needs of U. S. citizens. Cornyn also said the bill allows certain criminal aliens to qualify.

Cornyn favors comprehensive immigration reform, a bill that addresses security at the border.

If these students are illegal aliens, ICE should meet them in DC, arrest and deport them.

    That is the law.

Same pile we've already heard. Not changing our minds.

Leave America with the parents that messed up your lives.

Those three are still being exploited.

Tom Tancredo told ICE that they were going to be at that meeting. Evidently ICE didn't show up.

Doesn't Latin America have enough civilization, diversity and resources that these kids could use their broad experience to find a comfortable niche? Teaching English as a second language is always a popular vocation, anywhere in the world.

GO TOM!! He always tries to get ICE to do the right thing.

Maybe ICE will arrest them in Texas when they return?

We can always hope ICE will grow a spine and do the right thing.

Get these people out of our country, ICE ..

or do we need a new ICE machine!!

Ever stayed in one of those hotels where the ICE machine was broken?

That's our problem ... our ICE machine is broken.

GRRRR!! I don't know about you but I never stay twice in a hotel with a broken ICE machine?

Lets remember that next year when we go to the polls.

Good quip Judy,I like that. And as for the guy who claims that he knows nothing about Mexico, he will learn in time if he has half a brain in his head. And besides I can't believe his parents haven't told him ANYTHING ABOUT HIS NATIVE COUNTRY. Cry me a river and an ocean too. And as far as churches getting involved in this they should be taxed because they are in violation of the seperation of church and state.

These invaders say they didn't know anything about America when they came here, but that didn't stop them from staying.

One student came to the U. S. illegally when she was young. "I came here when I was five with a visitor's visa and just never left the country," she said.
So, just because your parents came here on a tourist visa and deliberately decided to ignore their return date obligation, you think that entitles you to get legalized, get in-state tuition, grants, loans or scholarships and take college slots intended for REAL Americans? How about I came to your house as a guest and just decided to never leave? Would that entitle me to take your possessions, eat your food, use your car, and demand that you pay for my healthcare, education, etc.? Give me a break, you are nothing but a freeloading, arrogant lawbreaker. Go back to your own country and try making the same demands you are making here and see how far that gets you.
