GALVESTON — The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Dauntless arrives home in Galveston today after a 46-day law-enforcement patrol during which they helped prevent more than 140 people gain illegal entry to the Bahamas and the United States.

Early in its mission, the cutter arrested 56 Haitians illegally trying to sail to the Bahamas in an unsafe craft.

And, as the mission was winding down, it took 85 Cubans aboard from another Coast Guard ship that had picked them up in the Straits of Florida.

While patrolling the Windward Passage between Cuba, Haiti and the Bahamas on May 2, Dauntless intercepted the Haitians’ 40-foot wooden sailboat after its crew radioed for assistance.

On May 23, Dauntless received the Cuban migrants from the Coast Guard Cutter Willow in the Straits of Florida, keeping them aboard for six days before transferring them to the Coast Guard Cutter Drummond for that ship to repatriate them.
