Government contractor may have used illegal immigrant labor

DOVER, Del. (AP) -

While other states are cracking down on government contractors who employ illegal immigrants, Delaware officials say they have no way of knowing whether contractors are complying with the law.
Officials with the state Office of Management and Budget, which oversees government contracts, say there is no formal mechanism in place to keep track. And the state Office of Labor Law Enforcement has no power under the law to do immigration work.

Under a contract awarded last year, Milton-based Fresh Cut Lawn and Landscape Services cut grass at government facilities in Kent and Sussex counties, including Legislative Hall and the governor's mansion. One of its adversaries in bankruptcy proceedings claims Fresh Cut knowingly hired illegal immigrants and even went to Mexico to get them.
