Republicans Divided on How to Handle Illegal Immigrants
Letter From Washington
Republicans Divided on How to Handle Illegal Immigrants
By ALBERT R. HUNT | BLOOMBERG NEWS
Published: January 16, 2011
WASHINGTON — Republicans, riding high in Washington and in most state capitals, are sitting on a time bomb: immigration.
There’s a division coursing through the party; many Tea Party movement types and social conservatives believe the tough-on-immigration posture paid dividends in the November elections and want to ratchet up actions and pressure. Congressional leaders want to put the issue on the back burner.
Thus the new chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Representative Lamar Smith of Texas, plans to assail Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. over his opposition to Arizona’s anti-immigration measure and push to enact more punitive laws. Simultaneously, the speaker of the House, John A. Boehner of Ohio, made sure the chairmanship of the immigration subcommittee was denied to Representative Steve King, the virulently anti-immigration congressman from Iowa who, in calling for an electric fence to be erected on the border, likened illegal immigrants to “livestock.â€

“There needs to be a reconciliatory olive branch to the Hispanic movement. Someone with moral authority like John Boehner has to say, ‘We apologize.â€

Demos were clobbered in the Congressional elections because they were seen as ignoring Americans concerns about jobs. Repubs benefitted because they were not seen as being in charge.
Since at least February, 2010, polls have shown that Latinos are increasingly concerned about illegals and that they, blacks, and Asians favor enforcement.
Some Repubs are making the classic mistake - repeated so often by the media - of equating people with the "leaders" who claim to represent them.
Repubs would be wise to do a little research. If they do that, they'll learn that enforcement policies resonate with Latinos and that the only votes they'll lose by continuing with enforcement are the votes of those "leaders."
Outrageous statements get media exposure. Repubs need only counter with "Jobs for Americans."

They may want to think about who swept them into power in the first place and why.
Most importantly-and this is something Hispanic political activists are loathe to acknowledge-there are simply not enough pro-amnesty, anti-Emanuel, Hispanic voters in the city to prevent Rahm Emanuel from becoming the next mayor of Chicago. As much as demagogues like Congressman Gutierrez might like to claim that they hold the keys to The Kingdom, the truth is that they are not the ones who control the levers of political power in this country.
The open borders lobby has quite consciously made itself an insular, Mexican-centric, ethnically monolithic special interest group. And in order to thrive politically in a city like Chicago, you need a patchwork of ethnic constituencies-most of whom share neither your passions nor your enemies-to support your candidacy.

If they just start enforcing the exsisting laws there should be no negative effect. They can just quietly start enforcing them. They don't have to announce it they can just do it.
