WASHINGTON -- New York business leaders worry that a new federal requirement forcing employers to verify the work status of their employees could raise costs and waste time, while some small businesses say they know almost nothing about how the system works.

"However you cut it, this will add costs to government contracts at times when the federal budget is already over the top," said Kathryn Wylde of the Partnership for New York City.

The program, called E-Verify, took effect last week, and requires any employer on a federal government contract to collect documents from their employees proving their eligibility to work, and run it through a database to match it with Social Security and other government records.

The plan is to weed illegal immigrants and those without proper work papers out of the system -- but it could also be a headache for business.

One business concern is that the rule can turn employers into an arm of immigration agents.

A wide range of New York employers do business with the federal government -- from construction firms to management consulting and high tech companies and defense contractors.

E-verify helps Americans to get and maintain jobs. E-verify keeps illegals off of our pay rolls. E-verify helps our economy as Americans that have jobs pay taxes.

Don't know what costs it will add since E-Verify is free and easy to use. Unless they mean by hiring US citizens and legal immigrants, they have to pay living wages?

No one is asking them to arrest people for pete's sake. E-Verify is a way to verify whether or not someones id is legitimate. Some employers just want something to whine about since they cant hire illegal alien cheap labor anymore.

Poor law breaking business owners - the stealing from American Taxpayer is coming to an ending, finally. Taxpayers shouldn't have to pay housing, medical, and education for you to have cheap labor.

Not to mention the jobless Americans that you have and are abusing to hire ILLEGAL ALIENS.

In my opinion you are a traitor and are committing treason by damaging the country by aiding and abetting foreign countries.

A loophole currently in each state is that illegal aliens can go into the Unemployment Offices (ESC) and be sent into the workplace with E-Verifying their I-9 forms.

This is one of the reason Americans cannot find work. The states are permitting it to happen in the Unemployment Offices.

So who is responsible for the hiring of illegal aliens the state or the employer if they go through a state agencies. LOOPHOLES for who? How is ICE handling this situation?

Adding" costs to government contracts." How about removing costs from unemployment compensation programs as Americans go back to work. How about reducing home foreclosures and bailouts?

Probably Obama's Thugs are spreading the rumors to get people to rally against it ... wrongly I might add.

I've read it is NO PROBLEM!
