PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Governor Chafee said Tuesday that he is looking into the possibility that the state might issue driver's licenses or driving permits to illegal immigrants.

Responding to questions about a vote by the Board of Governors for Higher Education to approve in-state rates for undocumented students, Chafee said being able to drive would help people who need transportation to go to school or work or to look for work.

He said has spoken with officials in Utah, which he said is the only state that has established a special class of driver's licenses for illegal immigrants.

"I'm working on it," he said.

I have a serious problem with this concept of granting Illegal Immigrants licenses of any type. The Governor's statement claims that they might need these to " go to work or look for work." Is he not aware that it is illegal , that means against the law, for an Illegal Alien to be present in the United States or to obtain work in the United States without documentation? Does he realize that this would allow Illegal Aliens to matriculate to other states under the pretense they have legal documentation and obtain further documentations from that state? Does he realize many of these people fraudulently utilize social security numbers and other forms of identification to further their aims? Has he read the news stories of Illegal Aliens committing vehicular homicides? Does he care that these Illegal Aliens he is giving drivers licenses to " go to work or look for work" are displacing American Citizens who may possibly want those jobs? This only legitimizes their presence in this country , which is illegitimate by anyone's measure. This action if taken will have the effect of sending the message that illegal's are welcome , regardless of the Federal law, and the will of the majority of the people who are United States Citizens. Changing the law to allow a person who has entered the country ILLEGALLY and is here in violation of the law , to obtain any type of LEGAL DOCUMENTATION whatsoever is an outrage and an insult to the inherent ideal and concept of the rule of law our nation was founded on and expected to uphold. Not to mention the blatant slap in the face to every law abiding American Citizen who follows and respects the laws of our Nation,States and communities across the country. Reconsideration of this position would be a wise course of action.
