Deportation part of punishment
Being in the country illegally spared Arturo Aguilar Aguirre a lot of time in prison Monday.
The Mexican citizen pleaded guilty to two counts of DUI manslaughter and other felonies and was sentenced to the time he spent in jail: less than 14 months.

Sentencing guidelines called for 21 to 35 years in prison. But Aguirre was not set free. Federal officials will hold him, and he will be deported.

''We're spending money on keeping him here,'' Assistant State Attorney Ellen Roberts said in explaining the plea arrangement.

The state budget 'is in critical condition. The victims' families were not from here.''

Aguirre, 25, was driving a 1993 Isuzu Amigo east on Okeechobee Boulevard near southbound Interstate 95 in January 2007 when he couldn't stop in time for a red light, investigators said.

Two of his four passengers were ejected and died from head trauma at the scene.
