Deported man gets 6 years for trying to re-enter Arizona

The Associated Press Arizona Daily Star
    Friday, October 21, 2011 11:05 am

A Mexican man arrested earlier this year in southern Arizona for illegally trying to re-enter the United States has been sentenced to more than six years in federal prison.

Alejandro Rivas-Amador, 43, of Sonora, received a 75-month prison sentence in U.S. District Court in Tucson, prosecutors say.

Rivas-Amador was apprehended by Nogales Station Border Patrol agents on May 9.

During processing, authorities say an automated fingerprint identification system showed Rivas-Amador previously was convicted in Santa Cruz County in 1992 for attempted robbery, sentenced to one year in prison and then deported back to Mexico.

The Border Patrol submitted the case to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for re-entry of a felon.

Authorities said Friday that Rivas-Amador will be deported again after he serves his prison sentence

Illegal re-entry into the United States accounted for nearly one-quarter of all federal prosecutions and almost half of all immigration prosecutions in the first half of the year, making it the top federal criminal charge, according to Justice Department data . . .

Illegal re-entry is the top federal criminal charge
