Deputies overwhelmed with immigrant smuggling
GOLIAD, Texas Goliad County has become overwhelmed with a swarm of migrants using back roads to avoid detection.
Sheriff Robert DeLaGarza says the Sheriff's Department impound lot is almost full of trucks and vans. Each one represents a failed human smuggling attempt.
He says incidents involving immigrant smuggling have become almost a daily occurrence in this county about 200 miles from the Mexican border.
Local ranchers say smugglers use the area as a drop-off point.
The immigrants trespass on ranches until they are picked up for the second half of their trip.
Residents have responded by forming a loose militia. They voiced their concerns to Governor Rick Perry.
Perry wrote to them saying border control and immigration are the responsibilities of the federal government.
