INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Susan W. Brooks, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, announced Monday that Raul Perez-Arteaga, 56, Mexico, was sentenced to 24 months imprisonment on February 9, 2007, by U.S. District Judge Sarah E. Barker following his guilty plea to illegal reentry to the United States after his deportation because of an aggravated felony conviction. This case was the result of a investigation by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
PEREZ-ARTEAGA has been deported twice since he first entered the country at the age of 12, once in 1976 and once in 1997. PEREZ-ARTEAGA had been convicted in 1991 of dealing cocaine that resulted in a sentence of 6 years, and he had been deported.

Dealing cocaine is an aggravated felony for which PEREZ-ARTEAGA is prohibited from ever again entering the United States without express permission. PEREZ-ARTEAGA entered again, however, and was caught dealing cocaine again and was arrested by the Indianapolis Metro Drug Task Force.

PEREZ-ARTEAGA was given a 16 year sentence on August 15, 2006, in the Marion County Superior Court. PEREZ-ARTEAGA was also prosecuted federally for his illegal reentry back into the country and received another two years consecutive to his state sentence.

According to Assistant United States Attorney Gayle L. Helart, who prosecuted the case for the government, PEREZ-ARTEAGA will be deported to Mexico following his term of federal imprisonment.
