Activists on both sides of issue plan boycotts and campaigns

A renewed effort to influence immigration policy is beginning to take shape as expectations continue to grow that Congress might take up the issue soon.

Anticipating renewed discussions, activists on both sides of the national debate have recently announced caravans, conferences and campaigns.

A group of 20 cars is scheduled to leave San Diego next week and travel along the U.S.-Mexico border to gather information from immigrants about their experiences going over the border.

Enrique Morones of Border Angels, a faith-based volunteer group that puts food and water in the desert for illegal immigrants crossing the border, said the group would leave Friday. When they return Feb. 17, activists plan to hold a meeting at Border Field State Park to share their findings.

Members of the March 25 Coalition have called for a national conference to be held Feb. 3 and 4 at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. The purpose is to plan a round of protests, including a nationwide boycott on May 1 in support of immigrant rights.

Last year, the coalition helped organized the march that drew more than 500,000 people to Los Angeles and “A Day Without an Immigrant.”

Meanwhile, radio talk show host Rick Roberts of KFMB/AM 760 has been promoting a national campaign to certify businesses that participate in the federal government's voluntary employment-verification program.

The campaign is being sponsored by the Federation for American Immigration Reform, which seeks to halt illegal immigration and lower caps on legal immigration.
