Despite Danger, GOP Tees Up Immigration as 2008 Wedge Issue
    By Mort Kondracke

For the umpteenth time, American voters this year have rejected a nativist approach to illegal immigration. It ought to be a warning to Republicans: Don’t make this your 2008 wedge issue.

Election results on Tuesday, especially in Virginia and New York state, also should encourage nervous Democrats that they can support comprehensive immigration reform — stronger enforcement plus earned legalization — and prevail.

To temper legitimate concern in the country about the local burdens resulting from failure of the U.S. government to control its borders, both parties in Congress should extend federal “impact aidâ€

Sounds like a liberal illegal immigrant advocate is getting extremely nervous.

Linda Chavez wrote a column with almost the same angle. They are trying to use Va. to say, it's not all that important. But they are lying....the dems who won in those elections were pro-enforcement in all but one case. They are twisting the results to try and take the emphasis on illegals. This is SO obvious, just like the last election when they tried the same tactics.

They fail to mention the unprecedented shut-down of the congressional phone system during the final death moments of the amnesty bill. They also ignore the HUGE numbers of phone, faxes, and e-mails arriving daily that run 50-1 supporting enforcement and NO amnesty.

They are going to try harder and harder to urinate on our legs and tell us that it's raining. Don't buy it folks. All you have to do is read any article in any newpaper in this country about the subject that has a Comment section........the comments are ALWAYS overwhelmingly for NO amnesty and enforcement. A year from now, after the illegals have screamed their lungs out and (hopefully) marched some more, the people are going to be outright livid and would vote for ANYBODY that supported enforcement!

You see them getting distressed because they know they are on the losing side.

If the LEGAL community is going to get all bent out of shape, why did such large numbers of them vote for TOUGH enforcement laws in Arizona?? I have read comments on blogs by legal residents and they are angry as well. It's all a smoke screen. You could lose the entire Hispanic vote, if you mobilized enough of the rest of America, but pandering to illegals will lose you the vote from the "rest of America."

Kondrake is your typical naive liberal "beltway boy." This is the problem with the people on the "hill". They don't see and live the problems that the"folks" see. He has absolutely no credibility with me. Just another naive lib.

The GOP better be shaking in it's collective shorts.... the Democrats better be paying attention... We have had it and are putting politicians on notice

As a conservative Republican without a party.. I will vote as an Independant and will never ever again vote a straight party line.

You goof balls have all but ruined this country and the Tea Party is about to start

Having me vote against these fools are the very least of thier problems... the social unrest is just about at the breaking point... and they better believe it is the Legal Population thats about to go balistic, not the other way around

Kondracke is a smug, open borders elitist who been spouting superficial analysis for years. I've stopped reading him ages ago. Several columns were posted on another thread that show how the issue of illegal immigration is growing and becoming more important, and rightfully so. And just look how waffling on drivers licenses for illegals has hurt and is hurting Hillary.

Both of the Beltway Boys, Kondracke and Fred Barnes, believe in this goof ball thinking and somehow they still think that by their silly writings and their silly talk of "comprehensive immigration reform," that millions of Americans will be hypnotized into believing that this is necessary for America. for Kondracke and for Barnes.
