Supporters of undocumented immigrants held a rally today outside the federal immigration building in Detroit, calling for a path to citizenship.
Organized by the Detroit-based group One Michigan, the demonstrators chanted outside the Detroit office of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), a branch of the Department of Homeland Security. Several who said they're undocumented immigrants spoke about their challenges of living in the U.S.
They called for immigration reform, which is currently being debated by Congress and the White House.
The protesters chanted: “No papers, no fear, Immigrants are marching here” and “Unification, not deportation,” referring to families that are broken up because of deportation of undocumented immigrants.
Standing near the federal building off Jefferson Ave., some held up signs that read: “Out of the shadows, Into the streets” and “Undocumented, Unafraid.”
Attending the rally was Seyi Wey, a native of Nigeria who lives in Detroit.
“I am a human being and I demand that I no longer am treated like a second class citizen,” he said.
