LEXINGTON — The plight of a 13-year-old Lexington boy taken by his teacher to Mexico became known to the nation this week, but his family was concerned for his welfare for much longer.

Laura Rodriguez, Fernando Rodriguez’s aunt, said when the family discovered Fernando as missing Oct. 26 they knew he was with Kelsey Peterson.

It wasn’t the first time Fernando had been reported missing. Nor was it the first time family members suspected he was with Peterson.

Rodriguez said the family had tried to notify police or school officials of suspicions. But, “People just took us for crazy. We kicked and screamed and nobody listened. Now that it is out, I’m relieved and nervous. I hope it all turns out right. I’m glad this is out because it was choking us.â€
