Arpaio plans to launch his 20th immigration sweep

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio plans to launch his 20th crime and immigration sweep within the next few weeks, but his office declined to say when and where the patrols will take place.

During the patrols, deputies flood an area of a city - in some cases, heavily Latino areas - over several days to seek out traffic violators and arrest other offenders.

Critics say deputies have racially profiled Hispanics during the sweeps.

The sheriff denies the racial profiling allegation.

Illegal immigrants accounted for 60 percent of the 1,409 people arrested in the sweeps since early 2008.

The U.S. Justice Department is conducting a civil rights investigation of Arpaio's office.

The sheriff says the probe is focused on his immigration efforts.

ITs not profiling if the bulk of the people in the area are hispanic. Its called law enforcement. I hope they hit every fast food, construction site, and day labor gathering area and arrest every illegal found. Flood the BP station with a ton of illegals and hold a press meeting to show just how the illegal immigration situation really is. The border has not slowed down. Obama and Homeland Security have no grasp as to the reality of the situation down there.

Critics say deputies have racially profiled Hispanics during the sweeps. Yes, so what? The overwhelming majority of illegals are HISPANICS! What's so hard to understand about that?

I hope Joe also closes down businesses that are doing the hiring. This crap needs to stop!!

Sheriff Joe has stated most of his sweeps are conducted due to tips rec'd through a hotline number. Probably a busy number.
