DHS secretary to announce law enforcement grants
Associated Press - June 4, 2009 3:44 AM ET
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is meeting southwest law enforcement officials Thursday to announce grants to enhance border enforcement preparedness and operational readiness.
The grants she's doling out, amount to $60 million and are aimed at better federal, state, local and tribal coordination and cooperation.
They come from Operation Stonegarden, which gives city and county law officers the opportunity to receive overtime pay for work that contributes to stemming the flow of illegal immigrants.
Local officers are paid to aid Border Patrol agents in catching illegal immigrants.
The money also can be used for equipment for border security.
The Douglas and Bisbee police departments have been among those participating.
