Guatemalan women not only have one of the shortest lifespan's in Central America, but a report claims they are also the victims of a rising gender-based violent crimes.

The plight of women in Guatemala is the subject of an Amnesty International report titled "Guatemala: no protection, no justice: killings of women in Guatemala." In the first eight months of 2004 more than 300 women were killed, up from 250 in 2003, and 184 in 2002, according to an Associated Press article last year, which noted that many of the women were "simply in the wrong place at the wrong time." According to the Guatemalan authorities, 1,188 women and girls were murdered between 2001 and 2004. To date, according to the Human Rights Ombudsman’s Office, only 9 percent of the cases have been investigated.

In a different report by the Washington Office in Latin America notes that "since 2001, it is estimated that more than 2,500 women and girls have been brutally murdered in Guatemala. While officials statistics are not fully reliable, police data shows a continuous increase in the murders of women from 313 in 2002 to 351 in 2003, 531 in 2004, 580 in 2005, and close to 600 in 2006. Most of the victims were young and poor, and in many cases, the victims were raped, strangled, decapitated or otherwise mutilated. Progress in the investigation of the murders of women has been fraught with numerous shortcomings, including a lack of technical capacity to preserve crime scenes, interrogate witnesses, and collect and preserve evidence, as well as a lack of political will to resolve the murders."

According to a late-January Human Rights Commission, in the case of women being murdered only 3 percent of the cases actually make it to court, as reported by the Guatelmala Solidarity Network.

Listing cases of murders, WOLA noted that in the August 12, 2005 murder of 19-year-old law student Claudina Isabel Velásquez the investigation was hampered by the prejudices and discriminatory attitudes of the authorities handling the investigation. Claudina Isabel was categorized as a “nobodyâ€

This is my femanist side comming out.....I could understand a rush of women wanting to get here to be spared a life like that......just leave the men behind.....so far they have been about 95% responsible for the violent crimes.....and maybe there wouldn't be so many children they can't take care of.....

I could certainly side with you on that one Crazybird!!!!

Leave the violent animals behind, take their women to have better lives, and let them off each other eventually, likely, it sounds like what they would do to each other.

Though, you have to admit, these are absolute signs of third world nations, unchecked violence and especially upon women and children, and a government that cannot be bothered to do more than fill it's pockets at the expense of the people.

When are Amnesty International and the Human Rights Commission going to publish a report 'On the Average, 26 American Citizens Are Killed Each Day By Illegal Immigrants In The US'?

So true, MyAmerica, so true. It seems that these groups care more about everyone else, except when those same crimes are happening to American citizens.

My point in posting this was to show the "culture" of violence Guatemalan men have and that doesn't change when they steal surrepticiously across our borders. This kind of violence is tolerated and commonplace and it seems officially sanctioned in their home country, and they do no different here. That coupled with the age of consent anywhere from 13 to 16 explains why a lot of the illegal aliens from Guatemala, MExico, El Salvador and Honduras commit an inordinate amount of sex assaults on young teens and women here in the U.S. As you recall, just last week an illegal alien Guatemalan raped a 14 year old student at the elite private Hun School in Princeton (sanctuary city) New Jersey.

We have to secure our borders physically, electronically and militarily if we have to and start vigorously enforcing our immigration laws... YA ES HORA. NOt one more victim of crime committed by an illegal alien. Basta ya!

There's many aspects of other cultures than don't mix well with ours and can't be tolerated because of "cultural respect". Some just has to go and if it's THAT vital to some people.....then they shouldn't be comming here. I sure don't want to fight through all this again.
