It is marketed as “more pesos for every dollar” and “the best way to send money home.” It's one more way our taxes go to support illegal immigration.

The Federal Reserve program “Directo a México” (Direct to Mexico) was created by a presidential directive under the U.S. Mexico Partnership for Prosperity, and is designed to facilitate the transfer of funds from Mexican immigrant workers in the U.S. -- “regardless of their legal status.”

Its Spanish language promotional materials “help get your message out,” and highlights the “highly competitive rate” of only 67 cents per transfer to Mexican banks.

”Is there any wonder,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton, “why corporate executives believe they can undermine immigration laws without consequence? This program -- to facilitate the transfer of wealth by illegal immigrants -- undermines our nation's immigration laws and is a potential national security nightmare.”

With the federal government flouting immigration laws and compromising national security in support of the corporate greed for cheap illegal labor, it is not surprising that Bank of America has announced a “pilot program” in 51 Los Angeles branches to issue credit cards with no Social Security number or proof of legal residency.

U.S. business is addicted to the cheap illegal labor, and Mexico is addicted to the $23 billion that Mexicans living abroad sent home last year -- a 15 percent increase according to Mexico's central bank. It's the nation's second-biggest source of foreign income after oil.

With the exportation of workers nearly as profitable to Mexican economy as the exportation of oil, the Mexican government is increasing its demands that the U.S. provide illegals the same “rights” and benefits as legal residents.

Miguel Moctezuma, a professor at the Autonomous University of Zacatecas who specializes in immigration, says: “In Mexico, there is also a mentality of extracting from migrants: Go, take care of your family, send more money and also be responsible for Mexico's development. In the United States, there is a mentality of extracting the most work possible from the labor force: Come, but come with the fewest rights and at the lowest cost possible.”

Our government is complicit in catering to businesses eager to hire cheap, compliant, illegal labor, and Bank of America and others will do whatever it takes to get into the illegal cookie jar. This serves as an irresistible attraction to the flow of illegals that are willing to work at substandard wages and working conditions that depress the wages for all workers.

The low wages of the illegals (albeit many times more than they can earn at home) and the billions they send home, also puts a tremendous burden on the social services that subsidizes their being here.

Illegal migration to the U.S. is a safety valve for Mexico that they actively encourage, and it provides little incentive for the Mexican government to institute major economic, social and political reforms that are needed to relieve the conditions pressuring illegal immigration.

Illegal immigration “is not a phenomenon we were powerless to control,” said Center for Immigration Studies executive director Mark Krikorian. “We have actively permitted it.”
