TIJUANA – A young couple was detained Wednesday at the border by Mexican customs agents after a search of their minivan uncovered about $1 million in bundled U.S. currency hidden inside the rear seats.
The two occupants of the Chrysler Town & Country minivan, which had California license plates, were turned over to federal authorities, who planned to check with U.S. law enforcement officials to determine whether the minivan had been stolen in the United States.
The couple's van was pulled over as they entered Tijuana at the Otay Mesa border crossing. Within a few minutes, a search of the vehicle found the bundles of cash, inside the seats.
Heavily armed federal police officers and Mexican army troops were called in to reinforce Mexican customs agents at the Otay Mesa border crossing.
