Dobbs does not present historical face of America or Americans
    George Benge
    Gannett News Service

In the beginning, Cesar Chavez, the charismatic Mexican-American farm-union leader, was the face of the Latino civil-rights movement.

Now, regrettably, the person most associated with the Latino civil-rights movement is Lou Dobbs.

Dobbs is the xenophobic, jingoistic and chauvinistic demagogue whose biased pronouncements from his CNN bully pulpit demean and demonize undocumented Latino immigrants on a nightly basis.

Using the term “illegal aliens” as his mantra and sword, anchorman Dobbs has made demagoguery — the obtaining of power by impassioned appeals to the emotions and prejudices of the populace — his ticket to notoriety and better ratings.

Dobbs is not alone in his misguided determination to promote divisiveness and suspicion among America’s richly diverse people.

The so-called Minuteman Project is a quixotic mission to prevent undocumented immigrants from crossing the United States’ Southwestern border with Mexico. The men and women of Minuteman fantasize about barbed-wire barriers and James Bond-style surveillance missions to round up “illegal aliens” like so many long-horned cattle.

But let’s get real: Undocumented immigrants are here to stay, and they are taking the tough, dirty jobs in slaughterhouses, poultry mills, the farming and forestry industries, high-rise projects, construction and restaurant chains that nobody else — repeat, nobody — really wants.

Most Asian Americans and Native Americans aren’t complaining.

Undocumented people aren’t taking away many jobs in Indian Country, where soaring, double-digit unemployment is the norm, and there are few jobs. If anything, undocumented people are contributing to the workforces at Native American casinos and resorts.

And please remember that North America’s Indian people share a common ancestral history with millions of undocumented immigrants.

There was a time — before the arrival of the pilgrims, Columbus and the Spanish conquistadors — when native people of the Northern Hemisphere and native people of the Southern Hemisphere formed an unbroken chain of indigenous nations stretching from the Bering Strait to Cape Horn.

This is why so many undocumented Central and South Americans look more like North American Navajo, Cheyenne and Sioux and less like Lou Dobbs.

Clearly, the millions of undocumented people in the United States aren’t going anywhere, nor should they.

The reality is they’re here, they’re staying here and their numbers will continue to grow — despite Lou Dobbs, despite the Minutemen and despite congressional babble about walls, criminalization and deportation of “illegal aliens.”

This person does not know his facts. This is an untrue statement. He does not even reference a sorce for this assumption.

Again......I tell ya....this BS line is grating on my nerves. I don't consider myself or my parents "nobodies". That's the jobs we've done to survive. No...didn't do the slaughter house, but my dad did. Did the poultry myself and my mom was a "candler" for years. They built the original house that stood here till a tornado blew it away. I was raised that no job was beneath me and I'm SICK of hearing it is. My mom was a cook in the highschool cafeteria.....I've done restaurant work since my first job. Ya....they don't pay. Some are tough and dirty. But never, ever was any a job we wouldn't do. Can't do now coz of a language barrier or because they are running us out. And it peeves me to no end.

I so agree with you. It is because of those jobs all my life, that i am now disabled. I was raised the same. Any honest job is a good job. If it pays the bills and feeds your kids then hold your chin high.

So you work those jobs, scap to pay the bills with it. And Americans bash you non stop. Now your uneducated, lazy, shiftless. Since when did a high school diploma become uneducated? My father was a GM worker. Back in my day GM and Ford jobs were prized jobs and no one dare look down on you for securing one. Now its considered a uneducated factory job for peons. No wonder kids drop out now, the diploma don't mean crap its called uneducated. NOTHING they do is good enough or matters!

And college isn't a garentee anymore either. More than 70% surveyed are not working in the field they trained for in college. More than 60% of them are not making the income they were promised they would make as college graduates.

Its not that all of America is uneducated and falling behind other countries. It's that Americans have sat back and watched all their hard work given away to other countries or pirated. Our technoligy being given away is what keep raising the stakes. And our government uses those "other countries" in comparison so continue to brainwash Americans into becoming nothing but work drones like the asian countries.

Compared to Europeon countries Americans average a tatal of 1 month less vacation time per year, than those compared to in other countries. We are working more, making less, taking more anti depressants, and sleep aids than ever before. More than any other country compared to. When i grew up Saturday and Sunday were always your two days off. Not anymore. A good 40 to 50% of Americans now have to work Saturdays as well! Another 30% on Sundays. And now thanks to the "two income households" any day you get off is spent working on your household chores. Thats all they have done is turn Americans into work drones. Beat them with comparisons of other countries so they can continue the enslavement. And heaven forbid your company down sizes, and cans you! You may have to take a lowly job like restrurant work or construction were us cave men work.....

Ok I am done ranting but I am sick to death of so called "superior Americans" thinking they can give away jobs. And looking down their noses at the Americans who will work them.

More government-run media that is afraid the citizens will have another view of the world! Too bad there are people who have to demean others to prove their unpopular point.

I think my sister said my nephew had 60-80 hours OVERTIME last week -- he's a diesel mechanic, but I guess he's one of the Americans that won't work, an American citizen that also served his country in the military

    Lou Dobbs is reporting truth

I take great offense to the column by George Benge published on May 10, headlined "Dobbs' demagoguery won't change reality."
In his opinion, he cites Cesar Chavez, the Mexican-American farm union leader, as an example. Cesar Chavez was an outspoken opponent of illegal immigrants.

Mr. Benge also attacks Lou Dobbs and calls him a "xenophobic, jingoistic and chauvinistic demagogue."

Let's break that statement down, step by step. The term "xenophobe" denotes a person who fears or hates foreigners. Lou Dobbs has never led anyone to believe he "hates" foreigners.

The term "jingo" refers to a person who professes "belligerent patriotism." Is it belligerent patriotism to insist foreigners comply with our immigration laws to enter this country?

The term "demagogue" refers to a person who "gains power by arousing people's emotions and prejudices." Lou Dobbs is one of the least prejudiced persons I know. The fact that North America's Indians had a common ancestral history with "undocumented immigrants" has nothing to do with the current crisis.

And to refer to this country "before the arrival of the pilgrims, Columbus and the Spanish conquistadors" is ancient history prior to the establishment of our nation's borders and, thus, has no bearing on the current situation. Mr. Benge has no legal or logical argument to support the illegal alien invasion of this country, so he has to resort to name calling and attempts to besmirch the character of a news journalist who is reporting the truth.

    Amen Amen Amen Amen

I am in total agreemant Brian. I lived in San Diego for 19 years . I know about the continual flow of Illegals into our country. And its impact on the geography there. And Also the lack of respect for our laws!!! I remember a woman crossed over the border and decided to treck up the busy interstate 805 subsuquently she was hit because she wasnt seen walking in hte middle of he hiway. Her family sued they won even though she had illegally entered into the states...... go figure . an American who enters the Tiajuana slum city has to contend with Police who would shoot you as just look at ya and rob you as well and get a way with it. why he's just a stupid GRINGO. But i am glad i moved a few years back.

As far as Lou Dobbs I have seen nothing but Fair reporting from his platform and show. Now There is a journalist who refused to use the "ILLEGAL" word and attach it to IMMIGRANTS namely Ralph when the
Protests were going on. Of whom i have since lost any respect for. Brian I applaude you and your perception.
I am new to this forum but i am glad at least to have a voice. And i will be speaking my voice when it comes time vote.
But i am afraid that we as Americans are going to have to take a non complaisant stance and remove these Undocumented , Illegal, Criminals out of our country physically. You know all it would take is 10,000,000
Americans rounding up One illegal transporting that one to a train station bound for Mexico and placing them on it . let the Mexican government fit the Bill for the fuel !!!
And may i remind All Americans Inactivity I think in this matter could be the downfall of the USA as we know it !!! Why in ten years we could be Called THe UNited States Of "Mexico" if this is left unchecked and not dealt with .
Oh and one thing more we dont have to build a big wall. You know the best deterant i have come to know is the possiblity of losing ones life......
morbid as it might seem ,but if you didnt know if you would make it accross the border alive would you TRY ??
Would you consider putting your family at that kind of risk ???
Right now there are no consiquences for the action except deportation which in and of itself is ineffective.... but if you lay down some land mines ...... give orders to the border patrol to shoot to kill now maybe you would detere alot of Illegals from making the trip or paying Coyotes to tote them accross the border. I am not against IMMIGRATION i am against law breakers, invaiders, drug smuglers, and unsafe borders.
    That would surely detere me......

I have had a lot of people come at me with this 'doing the work Americans won't do', lies - it is just lies.

But I always ask them, "Who was doing the work before the illgeals came? We haven't always had illegals in this huge number. The chickens were gtting plucked, the crops were being harvested, the cows were being milked. Who was doing it?"

I have yet to get an answer.
