Lou Dobbs Tonight
Thursday July 17, 2008

Tonight, in a rare legal victory in the government's crackdown
on employers of illegal aliens, a large McDonald's franchisee
has pleaded guilty in federal court to supplying illegal
workers with false identification and has agreed to pay a $1
million fine.

The case stems from a worksite raid last year that swept up 58
illegal alien workers at 11 McDonald's restaurants in Reno,
Nevada. We’ll have that story, and all the day’s news from
around the country. Plus:

* Banks have started to check what people are buying with
credit cards to determine their credit profile and the
likelihood they might default on payments. This is another
affront to credit card consumers, on top of ridiculous fees and
arbitrary changes in interest rates.

* Three months into the salmonella outbreak that has sickened
nearly 1,200 people, the Fumbling Do-nothing Administration
(FDA) continues to fail this country. No evidence of where the
dangerous bacteria came from – just dog-and-pony show media
briefings and a decimated tomato industry in this country.

* Our nation’s borders remain insecure seven years after 9/11.
During these seven years, Congress has allotted an
unprecedented amount of money to hire more border patrol
agents, build a border fence and initiate new border security
programs. Today DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff is testifying on
the sorry state of border security in this country.

* Americans are at risk each day as they travel this nation’s
crumbling roads, bridges and highways. The Highway Trust Fund
provides funding for infrastructure projects in this country,
but the agency is facing budget shortfalls that could halt the
desperately-needed improvements. Sen. Max Baucus has been
fighting to add $8 billion to the Trust Fund, which is due for
reauthorization next year.
