The Hispanic Women’s Organization of Arkansas has announced its 2006 scholarship recipients.

Since 2000, HWOA has awarded 98 scholarships to Hispanic students in the community. HWOA’s goal is to increase college enrollment for Hispanic students.

The 20 Latino students were selected to receive $500 each and were honored at a scholarship award ceremony Tuesday in Springdale.

Funds for the scholarships are raised through donations, the Cinco de Mayo festival and from sponsors Wal-Mart, Cox Communications, and Tyson Foods, Inc. HWOA was founded in 1999 by a group of women and it is an affiliate of the National Council of La Raza.

We have allowed special interest groups pull this stuff for years. All minority groups or clubs have at one time of another. If it is a group that is not government related or funded it is doubtful there is anything that can be done with it.

Many of these groups are government funded. Many get grants from the government.

Racist to me. If it were an organization that supported only white people and only white people got the schlorships you bet there'd be screaming from them! If it were the same and only black people benefitted, they'd be screaming too.

Well, I don't know, but it just seems that those that point the finger at racists have three fingers and a thumb pointing at them. I want to form a huge government funded, corporate sponsored, tax exempt outfit called "Grande Gringo."

I want membership in Grande Gringo. Can I be on staff so I can get a fat check?

I would consider it racist if they collected funds for scholarships and did not express they would only be awarded to Hispanic students and then awarded the scholarships only to Hispanic students. That would be racist and deception. It's a clarity issue and the people donating should know what they are contributing to.

In case you didn't know, when you contribute to a non-profit (NP), you can restrict the funds. You can say you only want the donation to be used for say food purchases or building maintenance. What ever you want. The non-profit recipient has to abide by the donors wishes. When you write a check, to a non-profit, write on the check how the funds are to be used. When they cash the check they are agreeing to the conditions you have placed on the funds. A check is a contract and promissory note.... blah blah blah Often, donors see a need and it insures the NP spends the funds for that need.
