DOL Women’s Bureau Director to Speak at Report Release Event on Latina Immigrants in the U.S.
New report shows that community organizations play a vital role in providing services to Latina immigrants who may not have access to other forms of support
March 23, 2011 03:10 PM Eastern Daylight Time

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR) will release a new report at an event co-hosted with the National Council of La Raza and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. Sara Manzano-DÃ*az, Director of the Women's Bureau at the U.S. Department of Labor, will give the keynote address.

The report, Organizations Working with Latina Immigrants: Resources and Strategies for Change, by Cynthia Hess, Ph.D., Jane Henrici, Ph.D., and Claudia Williams, finds that nonprofit community and religious organizations have stepped in to assist Latina immigrants who face challenges such as lack of health care and violence at home or in the workplace. The efforts of these groups, however, may be limited by immigration enforcement and legislation.

Based on more than 450 interviews with organizational leaders in the metropolitan areas of Atlanta, Phoenix, and Northern Virginia, the study finds that nonprofit groups and congregations often lead the way in changing policies that affect immigrants and in providing resources for recent immigrants. This event and research for the report were sponsored by the Ford Foundation. All members of the press and bloggers are invited to join the event or the live webcast.

Embargoed (until March 25, 2011) copies of the report are available. To request a copy, please e-mail dobuzinskis@iwpr.org.
