    Dominican Republic blocking Haitian refugees

Media sources in the Dominican Repulicv are reporting that thousands of Haitians are trying to cross into the Dominican Republic, the Spanish-speaking nation that shares the island of Hispaniola with its sister republic. Haitians are trying to cross the frontier into the Domincan Republic to purchase food, fuel, water, and candles. The electric system in Haiti has collapsed and Haitians are contending with pitchblack darkness, along with the lack of adequate medical care.

Dominican military stationed along the border are allowing only those Haitians in possession of passports and valid Dominican visas to cross into Dominican territory. The Dominican military has reinforced its presence all along the border, reportedly so as to prevent a deluge of immigrants – according to Dominican media.

Reports from refugees indicate widespread destruction in Haiti. The bridge uniting Cap Haitien with Port-au-Prince is reportedly severely damaged, as are roads between the two cities. The January 12 temblor, which registered 7.0 on the Richter scale, was felt strongly in Ouanaminthe (also known as Juana Mendez, in Spanish), Cap Haitien, Fourt Liberté, Trou del Nort, Millot and other towns on Haiti’s northern coast. Damage there is reportedly minor.

Transortation between Haiti and the Dominican Republic was paralyzed on January 12 due to the news of the quake, but trucks began crossing into Haiti by January 13.

Where's the compassion? Open the border wide DR, after all, the Haitians "just want a better life". Be sure to pay for all their expenses too, education, medical, food stamps. You know, all the stuff YOUR nationals demand from us. If you refuse, you are RAAAAAAAACISTS.

Ironic, isn't it? We have how many illegal aliens from the DR squatting in the US and demanding we subsidize them; decry interior and border enforcement, etc., etc., etc.

I'm sure merchants in the Domincan Republic have figured out how to make a buck off the Haitian's situation. I'm sure they are sending all the wares and food they can sell. Free markets are a beautiful thing. Demand driven.

I could be wrong but I have the impression that the DR is mostly Hispanic while Haiti is mostly black. So the refusal is SOP.

Just go into Washington Heights or the Bronx in NYC and there are thousands upon thousands of Domincan B2 visa overstays living in the housing projects there, courtesy of Mayor Mike Bloomberg.

    Haiti vs D.R.

The Dominican Republic has a long standing battle against illegal aliens from Haiti. They tend to come in and undercut the salaries of domenstic labor. Because most Haitians are of pure African heritage and most Dominicans are mulattos anyone with skin darker than the average is viewed with suspicion in the D.R.
