Six alleged Gulf Cartel gunmen were arrested after two encounters with police last week in Tampico, according to Mexican authorities.

The arrests took place late Thursday and early Friday when Mexican federal police officers (SSP) patrolling a rural road known as Tope Borrego spotted two men carrying assault rifles, an SSP press release stated.

When the police officers approached the men, the suspects opened fire on the police convoy and a short firefight ensued. After arresting the two men, police officers learned that they had been guarding a nearby ranch that was being used by the Gulf Cartel, the release stated.

When police arrived at the ranch, they came under fire from four gunmen, the agency reported. After a brief exchange of gunfire, the officers arrested the four men and seized several weapons, the release stated.

According to the federal police, the alleged Gulf Cartel members were all from Matamoros. In the release, all six described as gunmen and all were listed as facing murder charges.
