DPS arrests 2 after mile-long chase

    By Becky Pallack
    ARIZONA DAILY STAR

Two illegal entrants were arrested Thursday after leading Highway Patrol officers on a mile-long chase in which one of the entrants was hit by a vehicle.

The incident began when an officer tried to pull over a black Chevrolet Suburban on Interstate 10 because it wouldn't get out of her way as she was driving to the scene of an accident with injuries on Interstate 19.

She wanted to investigate because the driver was speeding and driving recklessly, said Officer Jim Oien, a spokesman for the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The driver turned onto city streets when the officer tried to stop the vehicle, Oien said. The officer chased it while other officers went to the accident.

Near the 1700 block of East Benson Highway, close to the Pima County Sheriff's Department headquarters, the Suburban stopped and six people jumped out and ran, Oien said.

As they crossed the busy street, a woman in the group was clipped by the mirror of another vehicle, Oien said. That driver stopped, but the woman kept running into a wash.

Officers continued to chase the group and a helicopter joined the search about 10 a.m. Officers found two of the people in the wash and arrested them. The other four escaped.

The driver of the SUV was charged with unlawful flight from a law enforcement vehicle, reckless driving and false reporting to law enforcement. That man has been deported 17 times under different aliases, Oien said, and was booked into the Pima County jail as a John Doe.

The woman, whose name was not released, was turned over to the Border Patrol to be deported. Her minor injuries did not require medical attention. Oien did not know the entrants' nationalities.

I bet he was driving the SUV with an illegal driver's license if he had a license at all!

Would that we could put one of those tiny rice size chips in his arm that would give his permanent address and contact number like they have for dogs!

I'm not calling him a dog, now. I'm just saying they do that for dogs.
