Raids near Oregon border nets 12K-plus pot plants

    The Associated Press
    3:42 p.m. August 17, 2009

CRESCENT CITY, Calif. — A sweep of marijuana gardens near the Oregon border have netted more than 12,000 plants last week.

State and local agents found a total of eight gardens in Del Norte County and Six Rivers National Forest.

No suspects were arrested during the raids, but authorities found several encampments and watering systems the diverted water from nearby creeks.

Authorities say they suspect the gardens were run by Mexican and Asian drug cartels, based on the ethnicity of the food and the written notes found at the sites.

The raids were a joint operation of the Del Norte Sheriff's Office, state Justice Department and the U.S. Forest Service.

I was recently reading an artilce about Mendocino. It said growers are sometimes using people's private land to grow pot. Some of the property owners are afraid to walk to far from home on their own land. And some have actually found some "grows" on their land.
