Dreamers protest outside Arizona AG's office

Dreamers protest outside Arizona AG's office

PHOENIX (AP) - Some youth living in the country illegally and pushing for immigration reform burned their high school diplomas in front of the Arizona Attorney General's Office in Phoenix.

They're part of a group of immigrants known as "Dreamers." That's in reference to the U.S. Dream Act bill that would grant permanent residency to students whose parents brought them to the U.S. illegally.

They protested Attorney General Tom Horne's decision to file a lawsuit that could possibly limit college opportunities for thousands of Dreamers.

The Dreamers say Horne's suit basically makes their high school diplomas worthless.

After burning diplomas Tuesday, the Dreamers donned aprons and began working at a taco truck positioned in front of Horne's office.

They say keeping them from attending a community college forces them to work minimum-wage jobs.

PHOTOS: Several Arrested in Protest at AG's Office

(KFYI News) – Ten people were arrested Thursday afternoon during a protest at the office of Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne.
About 50 people gathered in the main lobby of the attorney general's office. At first, the protest was calm, as several people spoke about their opposition to Horne's lawsuit against the Maricopa Community College board. The board voted to allow DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients – who have deportation deferrals and federal work permits – to pay in-state tuition.
Horne's lawsuit claims the practice violates state law, which requires anyone in the country illegally to pay out-of-state tuition, which is several times higher.
Protest organizer Randy Parraz tells KFYI News that Horne doesn't have to pursue the lawsuit. "We've talked to former Attorney General, Republican Grant Woods, and former Attorney General, Democrat Terry Goddard. They both said it's his discretion, and he could choose to use his resources to go after real criminals, but instead, he's focusing right now on Dreamers."
Eventually, the protest in the AG's lobby grew loud as protesters began chanting "Drop the lawsuit". Capitol police officers, who had been standing on the sidelines watching, moved in and announced "You're trespassing. You're disrupting the employees in the building. Anyone that stays here is gonna be under arrest. Leave now or you will be arrested."
That prompted some in the crowd to sit on the floor and begin singing "This Little Light of Mine." Officers began lifting protesters off the floor and taking them through a door into a hallway, where their hands were cuffed behind their backs.
The crowd shouted "Arrest Tom Horne" as most of them began leaving the building and gathered on the sidewalk outside.
In a statement issued by his office, Horne said "As the Attorney General, I am obligated to enforce the law. This suit reflects our analysis of what the law requires. The final decision will be made by a judge."

Article above that I just posted must be an earlier protest as it's dated Oct. 18.
