A 33-year-old father is dead as a result of a head-on collision on N.C. Highway 130 near the Columbus County line Saturday.

The other driver, 26-year-old Ramiro Gallegos Gallegos, of 657 Wolf Way in Supply was charged with second-degree murder on Sunday, N.C. Highway Patrol troopers said. He was also charged with reckless driving, driving while license revoked and driving while impaired.

Mr. Gallegos’ blood alcohol level was .22, almost three times the legal limit of .08, said Sgt. A.E. Morris of the N.C. Highway Patrol. Mr. Gallegos is being held in the Brunswick County jail without the possibility of bail.

Philip Scott Gardner, of Mount Holly, and his 31-year-old wife, Catina, and two young children were traveling east on N.C. 130 in a 2001 Subaru about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, when they were hit by a 1999 Ford F150 pickup truck driven by Mr. Gallegos.

Mr. Gallegos was driving west when he crossed the center line and hit Mr. Gardner’s car head-on.

Mr. and Mrs. Gardner were airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where Mr. Gardner died. Mrs. Gardner is in critical condition, troopers said Sunday afternoon.

The Garnders’ two children, ages 2 and 5 were treated and released from Brunswick Community Hospital Saturday, troopers said.

Mr. Gallegos had three passengers in the front seat of the pickup truck, none of them wearing seatbelts. All four were ejected from the vehicle, troopers said.

The names of the passengers were not available at press time. Two of the passengers were transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where they were treated for minor injuries before they were released, troopers said. Mr. Gallegos and another passenger ran from the scene, but were apprehended by Brunswick County deputies a short time later, troopers said.
