Driver Charged With Murder Was In Deportation Process

    By KARYN CZAR • MAY 28, 2015

The man accused of driving drunk and hitting and killing Lexington attorney Mark Hinkel during the Horsey Hundred cycling event on Saturday has been in the process of being deported since June 0f 2013.

29-year old Odilon Paz-Salvador had four prior DUI charges spanning five years before Saturday’s accident. Police say Paz-Salvador was driving well over the speed limit when he hit Hinkel.

The impact threw Hinkel into the windshield and into the bed of Paz-Salvador’s truck. Police stopped him three miles from the crash site and found an open beer in the cup holder and according to the report filed at the scene, Paz-Salvador admitted to drinking at least five other beers and to smoking marijuana.

We spoke with a representative with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement also known as ICE. She declined to be interviewed but sent us a written statement that reads in part “

“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) previously encountered Odilon Paz-Salvador in October 2012 at the Fayette County Detention Center following his arrest for drunken driving, for which he was later convicted. He was turned over to ICE June 17, 2013 and placed into removal proceedings; he was released from ICE custody eight days later after posting bond. Mr. Paz-Salvador’s deportation proceedings are currently pending in federal immigration court. ICE placed a detainer with Scott County Jail on Odilon Paz-Salvador on May 25, 2015 following his arrest on criminal charges.”
