APPLE VALLEY • An illegal alien gang member who had previously been deported was arrested Thursday for possessing an Uzi assault weapon and leading deputies on a short foot pursuit, officials said.

Deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Apple Valley SMASH Gang Team stopped two men in the 2000 block of Rimrock Road East near Rancherias Road when one of the men ran from the deputies, sheriff’s officials said.

Deputy Edward Bachman was able to stop the man, identified as Jose Hernandez, 33, according to authorities.

According to officials on the scene, a search of Hernandez’s vehicle led to the discovery an Uzi machine gun and a high-capacity magazine.

Investigators learned that Hernandez is a convicted felon and gang member who had been deported after his last stint in prison but unlawfully re-entered the United States, Apple Valley station officials said.

SMASH officials arrested Hernandez for possession of an assault weapon, parole violation, Immigration and Customs Enforcement violations and participation in a street gang. Hernandez is also under federal investigation for illegal re-entry into the country and being a convicted illegal alien in possession of an assault weapon.
