WESLACO - Several South Texas lawmakers tell CHANNEL 5 NEWS they've received threats from Mexican drug cartels.

For safety reasons, the lawmakers didn't want us to identify them. But a U.S. security source tells us the Zetas made the threats to intimidate lawmakers.

He adds it’s not likely the threats would be carried out, but lawmakers should take the threats seriously. We’re told the Zetas have the capability to kidnap officials.

Our source explains increased law enforcement at the border is making it tougher for the Zetas to preserve their drug and weapons smuggling routes into the United States. They don’t want lawmakers to send National Guard troops to the border. Troops would threaten the Zetas’ operations.

The security source tells us the threats are an act of desperation, but they may have the opposite effect the Zetas want. The more threats against lawmakers make it more likely the governor would send the National Guard to the border.

He will blame it on Americans for "stealing their land 160 years ago".

Anyone hear about the Hudspeth County Sheriff, Arvin West, who warned citizens to arm themselves at a recent town hall meeting?

Last week, residents held a town-hall meeting in Fort Hancock, Texas — a sleepy agricultural town on the border, about an hour southeast of El Paso, that looks like the bleak set of No Country for Old Men.

A couple hundred people crowded into the grade-school gym to hear a chilling message from Hudspeth County Sheriff Arvin West.

"You farmers, I'm telling you right now, arm yourselves," he said. "As they say the old story is, it's better to be tried by 12 than carried by six. Damn it, I don't want to see six people carrying you"

I'm really starting to think that we might just be seeing the start of a move made by these violent organizations to try and seize control of, at least, a portion of the southwestern states which they see vital to their continuing operations.

The way it stands right now, they're sandwiched between the efforts against them by two countries and are being chased back and forth across the border......basically from the fire to the frying pan. And in the process they're losing lots and lots of money, arms, and product, their operations are being slowed down, etc. And there they are with no wiggle room, no breathing space.

From a strategic standpoint, wouldn't they find it beneficial to control a zone of their own which would provide them a means to seperate the two countries and allow them to defend against both Mexico and the US from either side?

And don't believe for a minute that this group is not capable of doing just that being, literally, highly trained special ops forces and:

They are trained in rapid deployment, aerial assaults, marksmanship, ambushes, small-group tactics, intelligence collection, counter-surveillance techniques, prisoner rescues and sophisticated communications

The group is extremely well armed, they wear body armor and some wear Kevlar ballistic helmets; their arsenal includes AR-15 and AK-47 rifles, MP5 submachine guns, .50 cal. machine guns, grenade launchers, surface-to-air missiles, dynamite and helicopters.[6] They are known to operate with modern wiretapping equipment. Los Zetas is known to operate with a higher tactical degree than the local authorities, often uniformed as Federal Preventive Police and driving similarly labeled vehicles. The group employes weaponry including grenade launchers and 50 cal. machine guns



What in the hell is DC waiting for.......these people are a military faction, not some street level drug "gang". Our government agencies know how these organizations operate and yet they have the gall to sit there and say it's not likey they will carry through with their threats?

What's stopping them?

Obama will tell us that Janet is monitoring the sutuation. Thats Obama's answer for everything. The borders will get worse and criminals will keep pouring over into our country by the thousands. IMO Mexico is this country's biggest threat and every illegal alien who enters ought to be treated as a potential terrorist.

he will do his normal, bow down and beg them to forgive us for our arrogant ways.

No doubt! Every illegal invader should be treated as a potential terrorist!The problem is these drug cartels are smarter than janet! They play for keeps! So while Janet galavants around the country promoting amnesty, these para-military drug cartels are moving in because Mr.Obama refuses direct her to secure the border.

So we can sit back and expect nothing to be done...as usual!
