Suspects in trooper slaying identified

The two men suspected in the shooting death of a highway patrol officer in Tipton County Saturday night have been identified, said Mark Gwynn, director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations.

Alejandro Guana, 17, and Orlando Garcia, 19, both from Texas, were arrested at approximately 10 this morning when TBI investigators stormed their hotel room at the Best Western Hotel Downtown on Music Row, Gwynn said.

Authorities learned of the men’s location after they arrested two people early this morning who admitted driving Guana and Garcia to Nashville, the TBI said.

The names of the other two men were not released.

No charges have been filed in the case at this time, but Guana and Garcia are expected to be brought before a magistrate later today.

The family of the Tipton County highway patrol officer who was shot and killed during a traffic stop Saturday night mourns his loss and remembers the times they spent together.

“He had such a lovely fiancée,” said Donna Jenks, great aunt of officer Calvin Jenks. “Their wedding was so beautiful, but it was the last time that we saw him.”

“Norm [Calvin Jenk’s father] is very proud of his son,” Donna Jenks said. “This is a very big loss for him.”

Calvin Jenks was shot and killed during a traffic stop near the intersection of state highways 14 and 54. Two men suspected of the shooting were arrested in Nashville this morning. Charges against the pair have yet to be filed.

Tenn. State Trooper Calvin Jenks Covington, Tenn. (WHBQ) -- Tennessee State Police have now arrested two men in connection with the fatal shooting of a state trooper in Tipton County, Tennessee last night.

Twenty-Four year old Trooper Calvin Jenks was shot twice, once in the head, during a traffic stop.

Police say their last contact with Jenks was around 8pm Saturday night when he booked a DUI suspect into the county jail.

He was later found dead near the intersection of state highways 14 and 54, close to the Haywood County line.

According to reports, Jenks had returned to the scene of the DUI arrest and made another traffic stop.

State officials say his cruiser’s dashboard camera shows him stopping two men in a compact car. After smelling marijuana he had the driver of the car stand with his hands on the back of the car. Police say when Trooper Jenks asked if there were more drugs in the car the driver said yes. Jenks was shot by the second suspect as he leaned into the car to retrieve those drugs.

Police say the two suspects were captured at a hotel in Nashville.

Jenks had been a trooper for two years and was the grandson of a
retired Tennessee Highway Patrol officer, Browning said.

He graduated from trooper school in April 2004 and was assigned to Marshall County in Middle Tennessee, but he transferred to the Tipton area in 2005 to be closer to his fiancée, who is in medical school in Memphis, Browning said.

"He was good at his job, hardworking and well-liked by everyone he worked with," Browning said.

THP Col. Mike Walker said the loss is "very difficult." "It's difficult for the family," Walker said. "He is family."

The last Tennessee state trooper killed on duty was Todd Larkins, who died in July 2005 when a truck struck him on Interstate 40 in Dickson County.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — State officials said Sunday they had arrested two teens they believed were responsible for the killing of a state trooper who was shot during a traffic stop in western Tennessee.

The 24-year-old trooper pulled over two men and was trying to get them out of the vehicle Saturday night when he was shot twice, according to footage from the patrol car's video camera. At least one bullet struck him in the head, said Mike Browning, a Department of Safety spokesman.

On Sunday, Alejandro Guana, 17, and Orlando Garcia, 19, were arrested without incident at a hotel near downtown Nashville, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Jennifer Johnson said.

"After interviewing the two men we feel confident we have the two people in custody that murdered the state trooper," TBI director Mark Gwyn said.

Hunters found Trooper Calvin Jenks' body beside his patrol car near the intersection of two state highways, Browning said.

Authorities believed the suspects were carrying drugs and drove toward Nashville after the shooting in Tipton County, just north of Memphis, Browning said before Sunday's arrests.

Jenks smelled marijuana on the driver, Browning said. When Jenks asked the man whether he had drugs in the car, the suspect eventually admitted there were drugs in the center console, Browning said.

Jenks went back to the passenger and asked him whether he had drugs. The man said he didn't, then opened fire, Browning said.

Investigators found what they believe is Jenks' flashlight in a garbage can at a Wal-Mart in Brownsville, 13 miles east of the scene of the shooting.

Jenks, 24, had been a trooper for two years and transferred to the Tipton area from Marshall County in 2005 to be closer to his new wife, he said.
