SB 1070 protests in Yuma. Somerton, San Luis

Hundreds of residents against SB 1070 turned out to protest in San Luis, Ariz., Somerton and Yuma Wednesday evening.

The recently passed immigration law, which is set to take effect July 29, requires police to check someone's immigration status if there is reasonable suspicion that a person is in this country illegally.

In San Luis, about 250 to 300 people gathered in Joe Orduno Park shortly after 6 p.m. and began a protest march that took them south along Main Street and back. As they marched, they carried protest signs and banners denouncing the newly signed law that allows police officers to question people they stop and then detain or arrest them if they are in the the country illegally.

Having returned to the park, they listened to several speakers, among them Yuma County Supervisor Tony Reyes, who said the law unfairly targets people because of the color of their skin.
