E-Verify can help public fight illegal immigration

E-Verify can help public fight illegal immigration
    Look for the Logo

Comprehensive immigration reform is paralyzed in Washington, and the government’s premier workplace enforcement program is stalled in the courts. Local governments are filling the vacuum of leadership on illegal immigration, while employers enjoy a virtual holiday from mandatory checks on their workers’ immigration status.

No matter how many times we complain that this situation is unacceptable, it’s obvious that a federal fix to this mess is nowhere in sight. But there is something that consumers and law-abiding businesses can do to prod the process forward.

The Department of Homeland Security wants businesses to voluntarily participate in E-Verify, a pilot program in which employers check Social Security numbers are checked against a government database to ensure that they are valid. Court challenges are preventing Homeland Security from enforcing mandatory compliance.

Until these challenges are resolved, we’d like to encourage businesses not only to volunteer for E-Verify but to advertise their compliance so consumers can be better informed about the people behind the companies they patronize. Registration takes less than an hour.

Already, 33,000 employers use E-Verify nationwide. Why shouldn’t they proudly declare it? They could, if Homeland Security distributed window stickers that participating businesses could place at their entrances. Companies known to have employed illegal immigrants in the past, such as Pilgrim’s Pride and Swift, could rebuild consumer confidence by placing the E-Verify logo directly on their product packaging or advertisements.

That way, consumers could be assured that when they purchase a product, their dollars won’t go to employ illegal immigrants. Fraudulent use of the logo is possible, but federal law already imposes stiff fines and possible imprisonment for employers falsely claiming compliance.

The absence of an E-Verify logo should not be misinterpreted by the public as evidence that a business employs illegal immigrants. But the logo’s presence would give consumers the option of actively supporting companies that go the extra step to comply with the law.

This isn’t a substitute for the action Congress and the White House must take on comprehensive immigration reform. But in the interim, an E-Verify logo would remind consumers that their spending choices can have a direct impact on hiring decisions.

    Excellent suggestion.

I think it would be very advantageous to companies that do signify compliance to US laws.

It would be great if on consumer products, that would "wake" up a lot of people.

It really is a shame that these people just want to "use" the US and not be real Americans. The division in this country has been caused by them and their actions.

This is a terrific idea and I agree, we should all get behind such a proposal.

My only concern is the likes of LaRaza and the ACLU. They will no doubt come forward with claims that such stickers on products and posted on businesses are intended to discourage hispanics from applying for work with these companies and businesses and are therefore discriminatory.

How could the companies be in trouble, they are obeying USA law.
Maybe we should get a law on the books that such is required on all products sold in the USA manufactured by companies within the USA. Kind've like all those lovely ingredient labels that can make you a bit sick when you read some of them. You know the ones, where you need a chemist degree to understand.

If all countries had decent working conditions and wages, very few, if any country would be harassed by illegal aliens entering. Little incentive to do so. Perhaps its up to American companies, those large global entities to assume a moral responsibility and demand such conditions for workers within their sphere.

La Raza, ACLU and others make mountains out of molehills all the time.

I HAVE ALWAYS AGREED WITH E-VERIFY. IT IS SO SIMPLE TO USE. I JUST DONT UNDERSTAND WHY EVERYONE IS AGAINST USING IT, UNLESS OF COURSE THEY HAVE SOMETHING TO HIDE.

You can count on La RAZA complaining but that is irrelevant. The program is run by the federal government and gives employers who use it a presumption that they tried to do the right thing regarding employee verification. This is a great tool, it's free, it's over 98% accurate, and it takes less than two minutes to use. It's a no-brainer.

Consumers need to ask the companies if they use it. As more ask them to use it, it will be used more.

It is a little uncomfortable for some folks to ask a contractor if they hire illegal aliens. Now, we dont have to ask. Just ask whether they use E-Verify. If they dont, tell them we prefer using a company that do. Look for the E-Verify seal of approval.
    287(g) + e-verify + SSN no match = Attrition through enforcement

I wasn't saying that the companies or businesses could get into trouble Real....

I was merely pointing out the obvious....that, just like they always do, LaRaza, ACLU, and the usual cast of villains would start screaming discrimination, etc. like they always do. To them it doesn't matter if someone is simply trying to follow the law or not....as we've seen, these people have no compunction about holding up implementation of our laws for as long as possible as they try to have them outright done away with. Even if they don't ultimately win, they've at least had the satisfaction of holding things up and sometimes for years.

And that would be the shame of it because this idea is really a very good one.
