Ecuador to open consulate in Phoenix
Ecuador to open consulate in Phoenix
by Daniel González - Mar. 31, 2011 12:00 AM
The Arizona Republic
The ambassador of Ecuador, Luis Gallegos, will be in Phoenix Thursday to open a new consulate and meet with local leaders.
The country is opening a consulate here primarily because Arizona is the main route for illegal immigration from Ecuador into the United States, said Maria Gabriela Troya, who will oversee the new consulate.
"They cross the desert, but they don't stay here," she said. "They go to the East, mainly."
The consulate will mainly assist Ecuadorans who have been detained by U.S. immigration authorities after being caught trying to cross the border illegally or apprehended in drophouses in Phoenix, a major hub for human smuggling, she said. But it also will provide services to a small but growing number of Ecuadorans who live in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado, Troya said.
"Our main goal is to protect the rights of migrants," she said.
About 1,450 Ecuadorans live in Arizona, a fraction of the 390,600 Ecuadorans in the U.S., according to Census Bureau estimates.
The new consulate is at Seventh Street and Missouri Avenue. Previously, the closest Ecuadoran Consulate was in Los Angeles.

They openly admit they are here to aid and abet their illegal invading citizens and yet, are still allowed to open a consulate on American soil.
Has our government gone crazy?
