Dave Gorak: Editorial on Latinos dishonest and mean-spirited

Dear Editor:

Your July 19 editorial, "McCain right to reach out to Latinos," is dishonest and mean-spirited.

It is dishonest because like most of the mainstream media, The Capital Times joins in promoting racial/ethnic politics like that advocated by various so-called "immigrant rights" or "civil rights" organizations. Latinos are not deserving of special treatment.

Today's raging immigration debate is not about "immigrants"; it is about illegal aliens who should return to their own countries and demand of those governments what they have no right to demand of ours.

The editorial is mean-spirited because rather than deal with the facts as we know them, instead it is peppered with inflammatory language that serves no useful purpose other than to mislead the reader into believing that those who support enforcement of our immigration laws and who stand by their right to determine who and how many foreigners should be permitted to come here are driven by hate. On nine occasions the writer used descriptors to label as "haters" those who support the rule of law and the right of self-determination.

Americans are entitled to hear both sides of this or any other public policy issue that affects them. That newspaper readership is rapidly declining makes it obvious the American people are not getting what they are paying for.
