El Diario editorial: White supremacists in New Jersey

    White supremacists in New Jersey
    EDITORIAL - 07/28/2007

    Supremacistas blancos en Nueva Jersey

The small business owners and ordinary citizens of Hazleton, PA, who fought victoriously against discriminatory measures targeting undocumented immigrants struck a powerful blow for the rule of law and against the politics of exclusion.

The other side of that equation will be gathering today in Morristown, NJ. There, anti-immigrant groups are calling for the designation of local police officers as agents of federal immigration enforcement.

That some groups believe that immigration issues can be addressed through persecution is not new. But that the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) is openly throwing itself behind the anti-immigrant agenda should speak volumes to how racially charged the discourse of that movement has become.

For decades, the KKK waged a violent campaign of terror to deny African-Americans and others their civil and human rights. KKK members brutally beat, raped, and murdered in the name of racial supremacy. White hoods, cross burnings, and lynchings are their hateful trademarks.

Some people mistakenly believe that the KKK is a relic of the past. The Southern Poverty Law Center shows the contrary. The KKK has 165 groups across the U.S., according to the Center’s 2006 count. El Diario/La Prensa has reported on the KKK presence in at least five New Jersey towns.

KKK members are expected to attend a meeting this afternoon organized by the Pro-America Society. The head of that organization—Robb Pearson—has reportedly said that he does not agree with supremacist views.

That bland statement is not enough. Pearson should have issued a firm denouncement of the politics of racial baiting. And while the Pro-America Society and other organizations are entitled to their opinions, they should reflect deeply on the consequences of an agenda that is attracting white supremacist groups.

I think they meant to say this, Zeezil:

Illegals immigrants and pro-illegal immigrant activists, with the assistance of MALDEF and the ACULU, munipulated an activist liberal judge into striking a powerful blow against the rule of law and local governments right to protect its citizenary from criminal illegal alien lawbreakers.
