CHARLOTTE, N.C.

The ambassador from El Salvador is visiting North Carolina to urge his countrymen to fill out forms that give them temporary protective status with U.S. immigration.

Ambassador Reni Lesn says there are an estimated 30,000 Salvadorans in North and South Carolina and about 234,000 in the U.S.

Lesn says registering for the 18-month, renewable status gives Salvadorans legal status to hold jobs in the United States. The registration deadline is Oct. 22.

The official says more than 17 percent of the country's gross domestic product, $3.5 billion last year, is money sent by family members working in other countries.
