ELOY, Ariz. - An agricultural producer based in Eloy has been fined for knowingly employing illegal aliens, which is against federal law.

Falfa Farms 95 and one of its operating officers, Brian Layton, were ordered to pay a $21,000 fine. Layton was also sentenced to two years probation.

In 2006, Layton learned that seven farm employees were Mexican citizens who were not authorized to work or reside in the U.S. By law, Layton should've fired the employees, but they continued to work.

In fact, Falfa Farms later submitted work-authorization applications to the U.S. Department of Labor and to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services on behalf of those seven employees.

In those applications, Layton falsely certified that they were not current workers, were still living in Mexico, and that no American workers would do the same job.
