An Eloy man, who helped his brother escape the U.S. after transporting suspected undocumented immigrants, was sentenced Wednesday to 18 months in prison.

Agustin Salas-Garcia will also be deported after serving his sentence, a U.S. District judge ruled.

In April 2008, a Ford pickup truck, registered to Salas-Garcia, was carrying at least 27 suspected undocumented immigrants while traveling in Arizona City, AZ.

The driver, Hector Salas-Garcia, who’s the defendant’s brother, drove at a fast rate of speed, lost control and rolled over the truck, killing four passengers, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

He left the accident scene and with help from the defendant, left the country to avoid arrest and punishment for the crime.

Hector Salas-Garcia remains a fugitive.
